Honey Lemon Cough Remedies

It is cold and flu season. Here is little home rememdy to help soothe and comfort the side effects. I pray all is well and those that are battling a cold/flu right now I hope you get better soon.

Whether you are coughing due to bronchial agitation from allergies or smoking, or suffering from the common cold, a nasty cough will leave your throat feeling itchy and raw. Honey and lemon, when combined, have the power to help sooth an agitated throat, while also helping relax the body and suppress irritating coughs.

Suppress Nighttime Cough
Night time coughing can make it difficult to get your rest, and when you are sick, rest is essential for healing. Placate an irritating cough with a cough syrup mixture made from honey and lemon juice.
Warm 1 cup of honey and add 3 tbsp. of lemon juice. Once the mixture is blended, add 1/4 cup of warm water and stir until smooth. Take 1 to 2 tbsp. before bed to help sooth throat irritation and suppress your cough. Refrigerate any unused portions for later use.

Soothing Sore Throat
An old folk remedy suggests using an actual lemon and raw honey to make a soothing mixture to suppress cough and soothe irritated throats. Boil a whole lemon in 6 cups of water for 10 to 15 minutes. While the lemon is still warm, roll it over a hard surface to soften the pulp inside the skin. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze juice and pulp into a bowl. Mix 1 pint of raw honey into the lemon juice and stir in 1 tsp. of glycerin. The nice thing about this mixture is that unlike most over-the-counter and prescription medicines, you can take this remedy as often as you need to without risk of overdose or poisoning the body.

Home Brewed Tea
There are a number of hot tea recipes designed to help suppress a nasty cough, and many of them include the use of honey and lemon. Make a tea by boiling 1 tbsp. of grated ginger root, one half of a sliced lemon, one clove of minced garlic and 2 cups of water. Simmer this mixture for 20 minutes and then allow it to steep. The longer you steep the mixture, the stronger it will be. Sweeten with honey to help stifle a debilitating cough. You can also add lemon and honey to your favorite hot tea mixtures. The warmth will soothe and the lemon and honey will help suppress your cough.
